Tes thought about Traf's words for a moment before smiling slightly "Hmm...yes, it is refreshing isn't it?" she murmured, though she was speaking mainly to herself. Her eyes widened at his last question, and she chuckled lightly. Was that concern in his eyes? How unexpected! She would have been much less surprised if he had tried to attack her. "Ah, don't worry brother. I should be well enough, but if I don't come back tomorrow you can go ahead and assume the village has either captured or killed me." Her voice was light and teasing but there was still a darker more serious under tone to it. "Honestly I won't be surprised if they do, I have been rather careless tonight...I wonder why that is?" she whispered, again more to herself. She sighed after a moment then stepped quickly in front of him and stood on her tip toes so she could deliver a delicate kiss to his cheek. She stepped back gracefully and smiled again, it was more warm than usual. "Till tomorrow then brother...if you need me I'll be at Marco's tavern, Shad knows where it is." she sighed before she took off in a graceful, gazelle like gallop into the woods. Her cloak billowed out behind her for a moment as she look back, a strange long forgotten emotion flashed across her eyes, longing maybe? Tes shook her head and pressed her hand across her chest, the pain there dulled to a low throb but it was still bothersome. She would have to let her corset loose a few notches when she got back to Marco's, for it was digging into one of the larger bruises making it uncomfortable to turn. Well...I heal faster than him anyway... she sighed, making a little detour to retrieve her things from the tree she hid them in. For the briefest moment she wondered if she should go back to the cave but she banished the thought immediately. It would be far worst on them for her to stay than for her to leave she decided slinging her bag over her shoulder. She continued to run silently until light broke through the forest darkness, a lantern outside Marco's tavern, where she slowed down to an easy walk.

Traf watched her disappear into the darkness of the forest, his eyes lingering until even his slightly enhanced wolfen night vision no longer allowed him to see her, still with the faint sensation of her lips on his cheek. A smile tugged the corner of his lips. He felt like a small child again, having just made his first friend, wanting to run home and tell his mother, bursting with excitement. It sent a wave of nostalgia and longing for home through him, though this time he wasn’t left sad in its wake.
He sighed as he thought of her comments about the village, and the wolf in him wanted to charge after, baring its teeth and anyone and anything that came hear her until she was safely into her room. He hadn’t realized how lonely, how desperate he was until now, until this stranger had so quickly become someone he thought of as pack. He threw a glance over his shoulder and the other two--three, he reminded himself, having finally noticed the tiny Voskon on Kavlin’s chest just before he’d turned away from Tes’ ritual. They hadn’t hightailed it in the opposite direction or run him off when he appeared, and that gave him hope. Hope that he might find somewhere to call home, at least for a little while. This area, the people of this city, seemed different.
He pulled his knife and hatchet from his belt and slipped them under the furs, keeping them within easy reach. He settled into the furs, sending a silent wish into the night that Tes’ prediction of her ‘welcome’ in the village wouldn’t come true, and fell into a light sleep.

Tes paced quickly through the forest humming old Voskon folk songs to herself, the morning still was very comforting from her. She took in deep breaths of the cool, clean forest air...it was rather refreshing after having to spend the whole night indoors. Tes tried to keep a clear open mind as she got closer and closer to Shad's house, knowing what his blood could do to her. This brought back the thoughts had been thinking about earlier this morning, the biggest being why on earth was she going back to this place? It was pretty obvious she wasn't welcomed, well she seemed welcomed by Traf but it wasn't exactly his home to be welcoming for, and she still hadn't decided whether this Falsko was dangerous or not. Try as she might, she still couldn't find an answer so she just shrugged it off and yet again blamed it on her curiosity. The smell of Shad's blood hit her pretty hard, alerting her she was getting closer to the cave. It wasn't quite as difficult to manage as it had been yesterday, which kicked up a new storm of questions she had to file away for later. Perhaps I'm getting used to it? she mused, entering the clearing leaving her pessimism behind her by no choice of her own. She sighed but didn't try to get annoyed, and again just relaxed and 'enjoyed' the feeling. Tes stepped into the clearing, a gush of wind blew around her as she slowed her pace dramatically. She took a few hesitant steps forward, sniffing the air tentatively. From what she could tell, no blood was shed during the night and there was no sign of a fight on the ground. Tes strolled through the clearing and into the mouth of the cave, the corners of her mouth tugged up at the sight of a sleeping Traf curled up like the wolf he was. She chuckled quietly and shook her head, she felt silly for worrying Traf might hurt Shad and Kavi now that she saw him curled up at the cave entrance, obviously guarding it. She already felt a kinship with the big wolf, but she refused to admit it and blamed the emotion on the effects of Shad's blood. Tes hoped over Traf soundlessly and made her way over to Shad, folding into sitting position at his head like she had the night before. She balanced her elbow on her knee and rested her chin in her hand while she watched him sleep, again she didn't like how un rested he looked. She really couldn't blame him though, it would be hard for anyone to sleep next to a potentially dangerous wolf Voskon, no matter how harmless he seemed to be. She let her thoughts wander on random things while she waited patiently for one of them to awake. Her train of thought started at wondering how Shad would react to her hovering over him, Probably not well...she decided, if she where him she wouldn't want her to be the first thing she saw in the morning. That made her think again about whether it was safe to trust (well she never really trusts, but I can't find a better word for it) Shad, and whether it was safe for him to be around her. As she pondered on these serious thoughts her hands automatically sought something to do. She started by reaching out to flick a strand of his hair out of his face but within minutes had all of it out of the leather band he used to keep it together and was combing through it without even giving it a second thought. Her delicate fingers entwined themselves in the bright red locks, braiding and unbraiding with easy familiarity the calm in the room gave her. She hummed lightly as she worked, her favorite songs from her childhood, mainly wolf songs that the elders taught her when she first started coming to visit Kado. Her expression changed from being lost in thought to focused again, looking much like a cat who has a feather dangling in front of her face. Her focus was now, of all things she had to think about, was the color of Shad's hair. Being a typical cat her mind was very one tracked and she could stay absorbed in one topic for great lengths of time, no matter how irrational or silly it was. Tes twisted a strand of his hair between her fingers thoughtfully, never had she seen such a nice bright color. Its so red...I wonder what it looks like in the sunlight, I bet it glows...hmm its so...pretty... she thought going back to tugging her fingers through it. Tes tilted her head to the side so she could look out the mouth of the cave, the color outside was slowly beginning to change signaling the arrival of the sunrise. Tes sighed, almost contently as she watched the forest coming to life while she waited to see how this sure to be unusual day would play out.

(I had most of this typed when you posted Tes, and I think I tweaked it enough to work around the fact that originally I had typed it without her there. If there's anything I missed, let me know. ^_-)
Ceytravf writhed in his sleep, his dreams clearly unsettling. But it wasn't until he had rolled off the furs completely and onto the cold floor of the cave where his back, bared by the way his tossing and turning had twisted his tunic up around his chest, that he woke up. The shock of the cold against his skin roared through his already distressed sleeping mind like a siren.
Having barely just opened his eyes, he leaped to his feet, but when he landed, it was on four jet paws, growling at some unseen threat. After a moment of baring his teeth, the shock wore off, and he realized what had happened. He let out a wolfish grunt and rolled his eyes as if to say 'Oh, not again.' Then he turned his attention to his clothes, too unsettled to pay his companions any mind or even notice that Tes had arrived. He pushed through the folds of the skin tunic and leggings with his nose, grateful he was near the mouth of the cave for enough of the dawn light to filter in.
Satisfied that while they were a little worse for wear from the unplanned shifting they would at least survive the day before needing any serious mending, he gathered them up in his mouth. He was just tall enough in his wolf form to keep the clothes from dragging on the ground as he bolted from the cave and off into the woods. He followed his nose and ears to a small stream nearby. As he trotted up to the water, he realized he could smell Shad's scent all around, and it was fresh. Wonder if this was where he ran off to last night, Traf mused as he dropped his clothes on a dry spot on the grass.
His muscles tensed as he prepared to leap headfirst into the stream, but when he heard a rustling a little ways down the bank, he paused. He lifted his face to the wind, sniffing, as his ears swiveled toward the sound. As he stood statue-still, keeping himself low to the ground, he watched as a rabbit cautiously made its way onto the bank of the stream. He waited patiently as the small creature made his way closer, seemingly unaware of his presence, and once the rabbit was only yards away, as close as he dared let it get, he charged.
The chase was brief. He was stronger and faster than a true wolf and the rabbit didn't have much of a chance. He left the limp body near his clothes and at last jumped into the river. He resurfaced in his human form, throwing his long dreadlocks and braids back out of his face. The air was icy against his wet skin, but in a way he welcomed it. It refreshed him, truly awakened him, helped banish some of the images from his dreams.
He dressed and gathered up the small carcass and made his way back to the cave, hoping a fresh, hot breakfast would make up for his little outburst, had anyone noticed it.

Kijah slowly awakened at the sound of the early morning birds. She had slept surprisingly soundly for the first night in over a week. She had to get a job and get out of this cave. It would have been different had she been able to bring some comforts from home, maybe a blanket or two. All she had to sleep on however were leaves and moss she had gathered to make her bed and that is only comfortable when one is dead tired.
She decided to start her morning with a run in the forest. She shifted into wolf form and took off at an easy pace. It was nice to run, she lifted her nose taking in all the scents of the forest. She came across rabbits and gave them half hearted chases not really hungry this morning it was more for fun than sport. In her wolf form Kijah had not a care she was free, her senses took over. The wind rushed through her fur as she ran she jumped small streams and fallen trees. It was an invigorating thing to run in one's natural animal form, but as much as she loved her wolf form she still loved the human form and was always quick to remember to shift before it was too late.
She caught a strange sent as she ran near a creek. Fresh blood had been spilled her, and recent too. There was another voskon here, another wolf!! Her heart raced as she went over the scents, trying to determine if she knew the pack. She wasn't dense as to think she knew all the packs, but still she had to see if it was one of hers. It was an unfamiliar male from the scent of it. She hadn't seen or smelled any other wolves in the area, she had thought there weren't many about. She followed the scent of the wolf, it carried others with it. Familiar smells, it was that Falsko scent she smelled earlier, and pretty strong, he had been here recently as well, the human was there as well, and the rat. She froze in her tracks when she caught the last smell, the cat, the feline voskon was here.
She wasn't sure if this was good or not, every time she had seen the cat she had been thrown not nice looks, unsure if she would be attacked or welcomed she shifted to human form atleast, she didn't want to seem in attack mode. Slowly she made her way to the edge of the clearing around the cave, praying silently she wasn't making a mistake.

Tes lifted her head at the sound of footsteps approaching, she stiffened for a brief moment only to relax again...it was only Traf. She had been so absorbed in her thoughts she didn't even notice him leaving, Tes scolded herself. You should be paying more attention! Some one could have been hurt, hpmf! With hands still gently fiddling with Shad's hair, she smiled softly up at Traf. "Good Morning Traf, did you sleep well?" She asked in her soft purring voice. Her eyes darted down to the rabbit in his hand and her smiled widened a bit. "Ah, you've been hunting! Thats good, you'll need a warm up if you plan on keeping up with me today." she chuckled, amused by her own confidence and enthusiasm. She had no idea where it came from, but she suddenly felt...well...happy when she saw Traf appear. Was she really that desperate for Wolf company? No! Absolutely not! It's Shad stupid blood right? It has to be, I have no right to be this cheerful... she thought sternly, but she couldn't bring herself to believe it fully. "Did everything go well last night? No more visi-" she started but stopped mid sentence, a noise in the woods caught her attention. Tes pricked her ears, her eyes focused on the forest visible from her spot in the cave, much to her annoyance she couldn't pick up any scent. After a few moments she shook her head, she couldn't hear anything more. "Hmm, never mind I thought I heard something...Did every go well last night, no more visitors?" she murmured finishing off her question, leaning back on the wall of the cage. This time she didn't allow herself to fully relax, just in case the noise in the woods was actually some body.

Traf didn't sense any tension when he returned to the cave--everyone's heartbeats were steady and normal, the level of adrenaline was barely perceptible. He wondered, almost amazed, if his momentary loss of control might have gone unnoticed. It hadn't always been so in the past.
He smiled and nodded a greeting to Tes when she bade him a good morning as he made his way over to his pack. He removed a small skin of water and bowl and retrieved his knife from the pile of furs. As he returned to the fireside and prodded the glowing coals back to life, he grinned at Tes' words. He had no doubt that she could likely find enough adventure or mischief to get into to run even the strongest wolf ragged.
As he began skinning the carcass and removing entrails, he dropped the unusable bits of the rabbit into the bowl to be buried or tossed further into the woods. He figured Shad wouldn't be appreciative of having a tiny pile of rotting rabbit lying around drawing predators to his campsite. Just as he was about to douse the fully dressed meat with water to clean it of any stray hairs and blood, Tes went on alert. With the scent of fresh blood just inches from his face, he couldn't smell much of anything else, and he'd been too absorbed in his work to hear anything, but he just couldn't see Tes getting worked up over nothing.
He continued what he was doing, hoping if it was danger he'd appear off-guard, though he was far from it. He rested the knife on his leg, ready to be snatched up at a moments notice, and he washed his hands and the carcass, helping to clear his senses. The wolf in him would have had his ears swiveling like crazy, trying to detect any and all sounds around them.
"No, no more visitors," Traf answered Tes. He chuckled. "Good thing, too. I'm not sure if our host could take much more." He leaned over the fire to rig the rabbit onto the spit over the fire, freeing his hands.
He breathed in deeply, reaching out with his mind to the wolf, finding he had the strength to change again if needed, despite the lack of sleep and food.
"So," he began, tossing a glance at Tes, still making as if he wasn't on full alert. "Where are we off to today that's going to be so taxing, kitten?"
(I ended up researching how to field dress a rabbit. Being my morbid self, I kept wanting to go into tons of detail, but I wasn't sure if it would bother anyone or not to read it, so I tried to keep it PG, lol. ^_^)

Shad was dreaming again. He could feel his mother gently running her fingers through his hair, coaxing out the knots and anything else the wild mane had gathered throughout the day. It had been thier habit each night and the easiest way for her to get her overactive child to settle down and sleep. He sighed in contentment and snuggled closer to her side, hoping she never stopped. He could hear her soft voice as she spoke to his father, but couldn't make out the words. "Mom." he mumbled, feeling the sudden need to ask her a burning question. "Mom, are we safe?"
Abruptly, Shad sat up, staring a Tes - half asleep half shocked. "What are you doing?" he growled sleepily, not nearly as angry as he sounded. He slowly realized that Tes had been the one playing with his hair. "At least that part wasn't a dream," he muttered, stretching lazily and inching away from her.
Traf's cooking rabbit caught his attention and he slowly turned toward the other man. "Wow, I'm really a great host," he muttered softly, trying not to awaken Kavlin.
(Sorry guys. Life took a crazy turn,,,but I'm back - I think)

(It doesn't bother me, the more gore the better! And welcome back Cass! ^^) Tes raised one of her perfect eyebrows at Traf as Shad moved closer to her, humor sparkled deep in her eyes. "Your safe enough, I'd already promised I wouldn't eat you or anything..." she murmured both shocked and amused, running her hand one last time through his hair before he jerked awake. Tes let out a merry stream of laughter, sounding lighter and brighter than ever before. "Well good morning! Do you always sleep this late when evil beasts lurking about?" her lips twitching up in a smile at the sight of his angry face. Tes lifted her self from the ground gracefully and floated over to Traf, taking a seat next to him. Well...that was interesting! My my....hmm, did he call me mom? Ha! Not really the reaction I expected...does this means he doesn't hate me anymore? Hmmm...curious.... she wondered, Shad's unusual actions setting off another chain of questions in her already over crowded brain. She stretched her arms out in front of her before turning her attention back to Traf. "Hmm, I'm not quite sure....I was hoping for a nice long hunt. I noticed a large herd of elk not too far from here, maybe a few hours away? It would would be...amusing to see if we can take them down, they can be rather nasty." she purred to Traf, pulling at her collar to reveal a darker patch of skin obviously scarred from an encounter with an elks antlers. Her eyes where bright with determination and confidence, just the idea of getting to do a proper ambush with a wolf was getting her excited. She went through different plans in her head until she remembered she had to get to town today too. "Ah, I just remembered I wanted to go to town today." she sighed, her smile faltered. "I have somethings I really need to sell....I was told Dark Blade was the best place for that...Shad have you been there?" she asked, glancing back over at him. She suddenly started smiling again, as his red hair caught her eye. It did glow in the sunlight! Curse this cat brain, get back on track! she growled at herself, quickly switching her brain back on the subject.

Kijah watched from the edge of the woods, making her way silently trying to gat a gather on the situation, she tried to pick hersteps carefuly but the sleeve of her tunic caught a twig causing it to snap. She froze in her tracks. She could smell the sudden surge of tension in the air. The feline voskon had tensed, she knew Kijah was out there. Damn Kijah you know how to stalk. Such a stupid pup's mistake to not watch the limbs and twigs of the brush. The wolf voskon had also tensed, he hid his actions better than the feline, but he was tense none the less. His knife was on his leg, it would seem natural for someone skinning the rabbit but it was also a good place for easy reach if startled. She was trying to stay downwind of them so they didn't catch her scent as easily but being voskon herself she knew that didn't mean that her scent was hidden from them totaly. She was trying to get a feel for them. The thought of another wolf voskon, it would be nice to run with a fellow wolf again, the lonliness of being alone after her years in the pack were wearing on her.
She wanted to meet the wolf but was walking up to their cave, whose ever it was, was it worth the risk? she decided to sit down and observe them a bit. *SNAP* Damn her tunic and these twigs. She froze and waited she knew that now they would definatly know she was there.

Traf was just about to make a remark to Tes when the snapping of the twigs stopped him. He turned his face to the breeze and breathed in deeply through his nose, disguising the action by casting a glance up at the progressively lightening sky as if to guess at the time. The scent was faint, but it was there. Wolf. If it wasn't so familiar, he wasn't sure if he'd have noticed it at all. This confused him, because all he smelled was wolf. Wolves had always liked him and would not have hesitated to enter the clearing to seek his company, especially the wolves from the area who knew him so well. That he was surrounded by strangers wouldn't have mattered to them. He knew that from experience. Painful experience, he thought, remembering how he'd come to carry the silver wolf's pelt.
Voskon then, he thought, and simultaneously his heart sank and ever muscle in his body tensed. His fists clenched, and he scarcely breathed. He hadn't seen another wolf-Voskon since he'd left the Eastern lands, except...
It took everything Traf had in him to keep himself from leaping to his feet and charging into the forest, teeth bared and his claws ready to rend flesh. The thought that his brothers might have come after him again on their father's wishes was enough to start a low rumbling growl deep in his throat that he couldn't seem to stop. He wanted to howl a challenge into the trees, a call to a fight to the death. Ejko and Haesas had killed anyone and everyone who they'd perceived as getting in their way of destroying him to honor their father before. Ceytravf was not about to let him hurt his newfound pack of four.
The thought had come to him unbidden. It wasn't an unpleasant thought, just surprising. He'd never been so willing to protect so soon after meeting them. Too many long years alone. As he'd told Tes, an utter lack of anyone who gave him the time of day once they knew what he was. The alpha wolf in him that wanting nothing more than to have a pack to belong to and to protect. All reasons why, against his better judgment, he was ready and willing to protect the people around him. With my life, if necessary.
He scented the air again. Voskon, for sure, he realized. But only one. He relaxed slightly, though as tense as he'd been, even that little bit was visible. Neither Ejko or Haesas would have come after him alone. They were littermates. They'd been born together, would rule Rockridge together now that Traf had been banished, and they would die together. Alone neither could measure up to Traf's strength or devotion to Rockridge, as had been proven time and time again in childhood and adulthood. But together, Maegnas hoped they could be the ruthless traditionalist Alphas of Rockridge that Traf couldn't be.
Traf had thrashed them both once before when they'd come hunting for him, and neither one of them was foolish enough to come after him alone. He didn't relax entirely, but he was able to stop growling, and to start thinking. Tes had been talking, but Traf had no idea what she'd said. Something about elk, and about going into town. Elk in town? he wondered, shaking his head slightly. Odd. That couldn't be right.
He was almost sure she'd heard the noises as well, so he hoped he'd be forgiven if he'd accidentally ignored her. He threw a glance in her direction, trying to catch her attention without arousing suspicion if they were being watched. The rest of his focus remained devoted to the forest.

Tes tensed at the snapping of the twig reached her ears, she was right before! There was someone out there! Her eyes dilated instinctively and if she was in her another form her ears would have been pressed flat against her head. She inhaled deeply, trying to get past the strong smell of rabbit blood and Shad. It was very faint, so much so she wasn't even sure if it was really there, a voskon...perhaps a wolf she wasn't sure. Tes rose very slowly, causally as if nothing had bothered her and strolled gracefully to Traf's side. She slipped her arms around her neck and lowered her head to rest it on his shoulder, pressing her lips to his ear to whisper in an almost inaudible voice. "Traf, I can't smell anything...Shad's messing up my sense's...its Voskon I think, but you'll need to handle that part, I'm going to go to the cave, I'll be right behind you, 4 yards exactly. If its Voskon Kavi will be the main target...and if it comes out of the clearing, I'm changing-friendly or not...be prepared..."she murmured, her lips where barely moving as she spoke. And she tugged and twirled one of Traf's dread lock, wrapping it around her fingers playfully as if the only reason she had come over was the show her affection. Tes backed away slowly brushing her hand along his cheekbone, not waiting for an answer. It took all she had in her not to leap out in front of the cave and change, and instead stroll carelessly to its mouth pretending to be distracted by a bird chirping on a tree near by. With a light sigh Tes entered the cave, and once she was satisfied she was in deep enough not to be seen she dropped the act. Breath came to her quicker and she let out the low growl that had been forming in her chest. In two long steps she was at Shad side, she placed her hand on his chest and pushed him back father into the cave, forgetting to rein in her strength and nearly sending him flying. She steadied him without a words and looked over Kavlin, no emotion read in her eyes. "We have a visitor, not one you can handle. Stay here and protect Kavlin!" she growled mutely. But its not like our visitor would be able to get far enough past me for Shad to even think about lifting his bow. I'll give my life if need be! she snarled ferociously in her head, not being able to stop the flow of words. Again unfamiliar emotions look over her and for a reason she couldn't explain she was ready to protect these four strangers. Tes moved to the mouth of the cave and crouched down, her eyes glued on Traf's back. He would be her only warning that danger was emerging, now that her senses where blocked.

Kijah held her breath trying not to make a sound. It was useless she knew full well that the feline and wolf knew she was there. Any good voskon would have heard her. She noticed the feline go over to the wolf, were they making a plan?
No they...what the hell were they doing?!? She's laying on his shoulder, they smelled tense but she was...well she was cuddling with him. Why would they act as such, unless, Kijah couldn't see her face nor the wolf they could very well be discussing something. She needed to get out of there, this was not good. Both seemed to be on full alert and the wolf had weapons, she only had to figure the feline did too, although they wouldn't need them if they went to attack mode and shifted. The wolf looked strong in his human form, Kijah thought she might be able to hold her own with him, but the feline she wasn't too sure of herself. She would try yes, but the felines had their claws along with teeth their agility was unmatched by any other and she was full aware than that.
Kijah was just utterly baffled by the actions of the voskons, the feline was now twirling the wolfs hair, what are these two up too. Did she move or did she stay, if she left they could think she was preparing to attack, wolves didn't always take kindly to others until they knew their purpose for being there, and she had never met a feline voskon of any kind so she was unsure of them. She sat where she was breathing lightly trying to decide what to do.

Whether it was the thought of Tes coming under attack in defense of the others or her mention of Kavlin that sent Traf over the edge, he didn't know. It was true that he knew next to nothing about the boy, but it was pretty clear that even a true wolf would likely rip him to pieces. As the first born of the first litter, Traf had been ingrained from birth with the ideal that you always protected those younger and weaker than yourself. Whatever it was, he'd had enough. He was done playing about. It was time to force the stranger's hand, though likely not in the way anyone expected it.
He grasped his knife in a tight fist as if he meant to charge into the trees swinging his weapon and stood up to his full height. After a moment, he threw the knife down with such force it buried the weapon hilt-deep in the dirt. He took a moment to make sure all the growl was out of his voice, then lifted his head to the sky and sighed.
"It'll be a bit of a stretch, but he was a rather pudgy rabbit," he called out, forcing the natural humor back into his voice. He spoke to the open air as if he didn't know where the strange Voskon was, though the noises had given him a faint idea. If they decided to attack and were hoping to surprise him with where the attack came from, he was hoping to spoil that surprise. "He just might make breakfast for six if you ever decide to quit spying on us and join us. In fact, he's nearly ready."
Traf knew well the prejudices other races held against Voskons and had always felt a sense of loyalty to his own kind, even those not of the East. While he was ready to fight and defend, he hoped deep down it wouldn't come to that. Especially against the first wolf he'd met since he'd left his home that hadn't tried to kill him. And hadn't he, just hours ago, been welcomed into the fold by other strangers--however begrudgingly?
